Neuropathic pain
is a chronic condition, challenging to treat and deeply correlated with
psychological aspect it can be codetermined by emotional and behavioural
factors, and it can play an important role in determining depression or in
decreasing quality of life.
Spinal
cord stimulation (SCS) is a therapeutic option in patients with
chronic/neuropathic pain with different aetiologies (i.e. failed back surgery
syndrome (FBSS), chronic spine pathologies and neuropathic diseases) not
eligible for surgery and refractory to any pharmacological and other
conservative treatment.
SCS is
theoretically based on the Gate Control Theory developed by Melzack and Wall,
which explains physiopathology of such conditions as hyperalgesia, painful
anaesthesia and spontaneous pain.
